design

Before I worked in journalism full time, I worked as a designer, creating everything from logos, flyers, infographics, website designs and more. To this day, my design background influences how I approach multimedia projects in the newsroom. Below are print and digital materials I've designed, as well as custom templates and interactives I developed using HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

San Francisco Chronicle

At The Chronicle, I've designed social assets, text-on-screen video templates, landing page mockups, coded website modules and more. Here are some examples.

I designed The Chronicle's text-on-screen format for our video explainers. Below is a video I put together after a shooting at a light-rail yard near downtown San Jose left nine people dead, including the gunman.

I designed the Twitter and YouTube audiograms for The Chronicle's flagship news podcast, Fifth & Mission. In the video below, an arts editor talks about how she caught SF Mayor London Breed breaking her own health department's mask rules for indoor venues.

I designed an immersive, interactive collage to show readers an inside look into how the pandemic devastated maquiladora workers in Tijuana, Baja California. I used Mental Canvas to place the photographs in a 3-dimensional scene, and used HTML, CSS and Javascript to adapt Mental Canvas' code to the SF Chronicle's CMS system.

National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis

As a digital communications fellow, I contributed mockups, design, and coding (HTML/CSS) to company emails and websites. I also created logos and graphics using Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.

Here's a few of my favorite projects:

Kairos Special Issue

I designed and coded the landing page for a special issue of Kairos, an academic journal of rhetoric, technology, and pedagogy, as well as one of the projects within the issue. I used mostly HTML, CSS and Javascript to build these projects.

Santa Barbara Independent

I led the redesign of the Santa Barbara Independent's website and designed and coded article templates for the publication's weekly online cover stories.

Here are a few projects I worked on:

UCSB Writing Program

As the multimedia designer and technology support, I redesigned and rebranded the program’s logo, flyers, and other department materials. I also photographed staff portraits and events and managed social media accounts.
